He was re-elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Hiriyur constituency in 2008 and 2013. D Sudhakar has held various ministerial portfolios in the Karnataka government. D Sudhakar served as youth affairs minister from 2010 to 2011 and social welfare minister during BS Yediyurappa’s tenure as chief minister from 2008 to 2009. On May 27, 2023, he was appointed as Minister for Planning and Statistics, Government of Karnataka.

In September 2023, Yelahanka police launched an investigation after a video of D Sudhakar threatening individuals during a property dispute went viral on social media, sparking controversy. He was subsequently charged with violating laws including the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Atrocities Act and trespassing. The complainant Subamma filed a complaint on September 10, 2023, alleging that D Sudhakar and more than 35 others visited her residence on September 9, 2023. They tried to force their way in and destroy a building when no one was inside. The accused allegedly insulted Subrama’s caste and hurt her daughter when her family raised questions.
