Dabo Swinney was named Clemson’s interim head coach after Tommy Bowden resigned after just six games into the 2008 season. Swinney was selected for the head coaching job over other candidates such as Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning and former South Carolina head coach Brad Scott for his exceptional recruiting skills. He fired offensive coordinator Rob Spence and instituted the ‘Tiger Go,’ a new ritual in which coaches and players walk the parking lot outside Memorial Stadium several hours before going inside for final preparations for the game. After a string of outstanding results, athletic director Terry Don Phillips put his trust in Dabo Swinney and gave him the official role of head coach.
This season, the club won three top-level games, defeating Miami, Florida State (16 points) and Kentucky (21–13). Dabo Swinney benefited greatly from the vote of confidence, leading Clemson to a record 10-3 season in 2011, winning the ACC Championship for the first time since 1991. In 2013, he also led Clemson to its third consecutive 10-win season, including a 38-35 win over Georgia. Swinney also set a Clemson football record by winning 32 games in three years, the most of any coach in school history.
Swinney led Clemson to its fourth straight 10-win season in 2014, making the Tigers one of only four college teams to do so in the previous four seasons. The Tigers had an outstanding season, culminating in a 35-17 victory over South Carolina in Death Valley. Swinney then broke records in 2015, leading his team to a 14-1 record, the ACC Championship and a trip to the National Championship game, where they were defeated by Alabama.
