Daljeet Kaur (1953-2022) was an Indian actress who worked primarily in the Punjabi film industry. She is known for her roles in the Punjabi films Putt Jattan De (1983) and Mamla Garbar Hai (1983). Daljeet Kaur passed away on November 17, 2022 at the age of 69 due to long-term mental illness.

A few years after her birth, her family moved to their hometown Etienne village in Lakot, Ludhiana state, Punjab. She attended St. Helen’s School, a convent school located in Kulsain, Darjeeling, West Bengal. Growing up, she excelled in academics, sports and the arts, and aspired to join the civil service. However, her parents wanted her to become a doctor. After completing his studies, Daljit enrolled in Lady Sriram College (LSR), New Delhi to pursue his graduation. During her college days, she was a national-level kabaddi and field hockey player. At the same time, she also developed an interest in acting, and soon after graduation, she enrolled in an acting course at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. While studying at FTII, she had the opportunity to appear in the short film Bonga (1976) directed by Kundan Shah.

The film was a huge hit and introduced women audiences to Punjabi cinema. After the movie, special seats are allocated for ladies and families. The Punjabi version of the Bollywood film Seeta Aur Geeta revolves around twins – a gypsy and a college-going girl. She played both roles with ease. In 1983, Daljit played the female lead in the blockbuster film Putt Jattan De.

Thereafter, she starred in many popular Punjabi films such as Roop Shaqinan Da (1983), Maamla Garbar Hai (1983), Laajo (1983), Ishq Nimana (1984), Kee Banu Duniyan Da (1986), Patola (1988) and Anakh Jaitan Dee (1990). She also starred in several Punjabi films opposite villains like Gugu Gill and Yugraj Singh. In the 1990s, she starred in critically acclaimed films such as “Udeeka Saun Diyan” (1991), “Jatt Punjab Da” (1992) and “Panchayat” (1996). After her husband’s death, Daljit fell into severe depression and stopped working in films. In 2002, she returned to the Punjabi film industry with the film “Jee Aaya Nu”, in which she played the role of Daljeet. In 2009, he starred in the movie “Heer Ranjha”.

In 2022, she starred in the movie “22 Chamkila Forever”, which was her last movie. Among her last films was Moga via Chandigarh to Melbourne, a film that satirized the migration of Punjabi youth and was conceived by Bhagwant Mann, the current Chief Minister of Punjab and writing. Although the film was shot in 2013, its release was delayed until 2022.

Apparently, she was starring opposite Mithun Chakraborty and Yogita Bali in the film, which was supposed to have a love triangle between Daljeet, Mithun and Yogita. However, production of the film was delayed for several years and a Japanese actress was later cast, reducing her role. The film was later released in Japanese and Bengali as “Sabotage” and “Swarantrishna” respectively. The film’s box office performance was average.

Daljeet Kaur passed away on November 17, 2022, at the home of his cousin Harjinder Singh Khangura in Kasba Sudhaar Bazaar, Ludhiana, Punjab. Apparently, she was battling long-term mental illness. According to some media reports, Daljit was diagnosed with neurological problems several years ago and she slowly fell victim to dementia, a slowly improving memory-impairing disease. Some media even quoted the news that Daggett had suffered from a brain tumor in the past three years, saying that Daggett had been in a deep coma since 2021. Dajit was cremated at Sadar Village Crematorium on November 17, 2022.

Shocked by her sudden demise, several Punjabi celebrities took to social media to express their condolences. Punjabi actress Neeru Bajwa mourned her death on Instagram and wrote:
