A massive manhunt has been launched for Khalife, with security checks at UK airports and ports.

Police confirmed today that the ex-soldier was caught in west London.

Scotland Yard said in a statement: “The Metropolitan Police arrested Daniel Khalife, who escaped from HMP Wandsworth on Wednesday 6 September.

“He was arrested by officers shortly before 11am today in the Chiswick area and is currently in police custody.

“We would like to thank the public and the media for their support throughout our investigation to locate Khalife and we will provide further information regarding his arrest in due course.”

Rishi Sunak said he was “very glad” that Khalifa had been arrested, while praising the efforts of the police and the public to find him.

Speaking to the media at the venue of the G20 summit in New Delhi, the Prime Minister said: “I am very pleased with the news and I thank the police for their fantastic work over the past few days, but also the public who came forward with a huge number of leads to help the police with their enquiries.

“The good news is that we have caught the person in question.

“As is already known, the Minister of Justice has launched an investigation into the circumstances of his escape and that work will continue.

“And this is obviously very welcome news. And once again, I thank the police and the public for their help.”

Khalife hid under a food delivery truck to escape while working in the prison kitchen on Wednesday morning.

He ran away wearing a chef’s uniform of a white T-shirt, red and white checked trousers and brown steel-toed boots.

A terror suspect thought he was using makeshift straps to strap himself to a truck as he was waved from the notorious zip line.

Metohija police have offered a £20,000 reward for information.

Police also revealed they were investigating a sighting of Khalife shortly after he escaped from prison.

A member of the public saw a man resembling a terror suspect walking away from a BidFood delivery van which had stopped near the Wandsworth roundabout, at the top of Trinity Road.

This man was then seen walking towards the center of Wandsworth.

Commander Dominic Murphy, who heads the Met’s counter-terrorism command, said the “confirmed” sighting could be “very significant”.

He also called on Khalife to surrender as he personally addressed the ex-soldier.

The commander said: “My message to him is to surrender, either call us or go to your local police station and surrender.

“With the reward we’re offering today and the incredible support we’ve had from the public and the media, we’re going to get closer to you, Daniel, you really have to come in and turn yourself in.”

The ex-soldier, who has been accused of planting fake bombs at a UK military base, is said to have previously tried to offer his freedom.

Despite this, Khalifa still managed to secure a comfortable job in the kitchen.

Justice Secretary Alex Chalk revealed the inquiry would be launched in the prison as he made a speech in the House of Commons.

An additional independent investigation will also be conducted in the future.

Khalife, who was attached to the Royal Corps of Signals before being discharged, was accused of leaving fake bombs at an RAF base in January.

He disappeared for more than three weeks after the bomb hoax before being arrested on January 26.

Another charge, under the Official Secrets Act, alleges that Khalife collected personal information about soldiers from a Defense Department computer system that could be useful to the enemy.

He was remanded in custody at Wandsworth Prison and was due to stand trial on November 20.
