Danielle Brooks Says She Filmed with ‘Stand-Ins’ on The Color Purple Set After ‘Everyone Caught COVID’

Danielle Brooks did what she could to help Purple’adaptation for the big screen revived.

The 34-year-old actress made the revelation during a recent appearance on SiriusXM The Jess Cagle Show that she filmed a prominent dinner scene with backups after “everyone got COVID.”

“You know, it’s one thing to do it in that day. You know, we’re going to do this scene, let’s call it scene number 15. We’re doing scene number 15 this day. We’re putting so many hours into that scene,” she explained.

“Well, we only did that scene with Corey [Hawkins] and me because what was happening was everybody got COVID, so now I’m just acting with stand-ins and Corey and I in the room,” she said. Because of the situation, the scene had to be shot three different times on three different days.

“[They] they called me the next day because they said, ‘This is great, but we want to get it because now more casts are free and COVID-free,'” Orange is the new black continue alum.

“We’re doing it again the second day, and what people don’t know is going from, you know, giving it all and letting it go, giving it all, letting it go, there’s a lot to do, but somehow we’ve made it through the third time and everybody’s there and without COVID, we got what we got,” she said.

Although Brooks said that while she wasn’t sure which image was used, it was “okay” that she had to repeat them.

“They were great, but they said, ‘We just want to have Fantasia [Barrino]’this shoulder in the frame’, and I said: ‘Are you kidding me? You didn’t think about that when I was doing it without anyone with an accessory?’ You know, I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ That is OK. You know, the things we do for our craft,” Brooks explained.

“The things we do for our craft, the sacrifices, I would do it a hundred times over now. I definitely would,” she later added.

Landing the role in the big-screen adaptation is something she told PEOPLE on the red carpet at the 75th Tony Awards was a “dream come true,” even after starring as Sofia in the 2015 Broadway revival of the musical, which earned her an award nomination Tony.

“I knew they were doing it and I really had to work hard to get the part, believe it or not,” she told PEOPLE. “They auditioned me for several months, like going to many meetings with the director.”

Her new interpretation of the role earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Critics Choice Awards 2024. It also earned her a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture at the Golden Globes.

She is also up for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role at the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
