Danielle Fishel Remembers Cutting Her Own Hair on an Episode of Boy Meets World: 'I Was Thrilled'

Danielle Fishel says she cuts her own hair in the episode A boy meets the world either “intense”.

In the last episode of the rewatch podcast The floor meets the world, Fishel and co-hosts Rider Strong and Will Friedle were joined by Jeff McCracken, who directed every episode of the ’90s sitcom’s fourth season. During their conversation, Fishel, 43, revealed that the second episode of the season, 1996’s “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow,” is one of her favorites.

The episode in question features a scene in which her character, Topanga, impulsively chops off several inches of her cascading locks to prove to boyfriend Cory (Ben Savage) “that physical appearance is secondary to inner beauty.”

Fishel said filming the scene made for a “high-pressure day.”

“I remember you being extremely nervous,” McCracken recalled. “You were a pro, obviously, and I knew you’d be fine, but, you know, we had one chance.”

“They’re all on pins and needles,” he continued, adding that he thought the scream Fishel let out when her image in the mirror saw what she’d done to her hair was real.

Fishel, however, said she has no problem cutting her hair. “Everyone was so sure that I was really afraid of cutting my hair, but the truth is that I was thrilled to get it,” she explained.

“I remember you wanted to cut her hair all week,” Friedle interjected. “You said, ‘I can’t wait to get my hair cut.’ ”

“I wanted to do it all summer,” Fishel added. “The reason we did the episode is because I called [series creator Michael Jacobs] at the beginning of the summer and said: ‘I want to cut my hair. Can I cut it?’ And he said, ‘At least let me write an episode for it.’ So I had to wait all summer. So by the time we got down to it, I was ready to cut my hair for months.”

The problem, she explained, is to do it in front of the camera in one shot. Fishel went on to describe the very detailed process to get the scene right, which included faking the cut several times and McCracken yelling “Stop!” at her just before the fateful snip.

“But then, the way I needed to know if I could cut it, you wouldn’t yell stop,” she recalled. “And then when I’m supposed to, it’s just quiet, and I’m like, ‘Really? Really? Really? Because I’m going to do it now.’ ”

Fishel also remembers negotiating with Jacobs about how much hair to cut. “I remember Michael coming out and saying, ‘Show me where you’re going to cut. Show me. Show me where.’ … Because he didn’t want it to be too short. And he knew I was in control because I would be the one with the scissors. So he wanted to know.”

“I wanted a little shorter. I knew he wanted a little more. And so, yes, it was a very intense day,” she added.
