Daronte Jones News

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reports that LSU’s next defensive coordinator is likely to be Daronte Jones, the defensive backs coach for the Vikings.

As a result, the Vikings will have to hire a new defensive backs coach for the second consecutive season. During the first six years of the Mike Zimmer era, Jerry Grey served in that position; however, he resigned last offseason to join the Packers. Jones was hired as Gray’s replacement almost exactly one year ago today. He is now taking a significant step forward by joining Ed Orgeron’s staff at LSU and assuming the responsibilities of DC for a dominant college football programme.

Additionally, it indicates that the Vikings now have three significant coaching staff positions. The offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak resigned, the special teams coordinator Marwan Maalouf’s contract was not renewed, and now Jones is departing to accept a better job.

For the Vikings, this is a significant setback. Zimmer and the players he works with both praised Jones for his efforts to the 2020 squad during this exceptional year. Jones had to cope with a pandemic during his first and only season in Minnesota, as well as a lot of inexperience and rotation at cornerback.

Three rookies (Jeff Gladney, Cameron Dantzler, and Harrison Hand) and a few more young players (Mike Hughes, Kris Boyd, and Holton Hill) made up the majority of the CB room at the beginning of the season. Due to the epidemic, Jones was forced to learn how to instruct and coach those players virtually as there were no OTAs or regular training camps.

When the season finally began, the Vikings went the entire first half of the year without ever starting the same cornerback trio twice due to injuries. Jones was able to make significant progress with the CB group in spite of all of that turnover and with the assistance of experienced safeties Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris.

In particular, Dantzler played outstandingly for the majority of the second half of the season. Boyd, Hand, and Gladney all made progress. Even Chris Jones, who was signed off the street midway through the season, performed admirably in his place.

This year, “he’s been earning his money,” Smith added. He does a great job of outlining exactly what needs to be done and what to expect, without overburdening the group with details that can slow things down. Based only on experience levels, there might be a balance there. He’s been doing a terrific job of giving us enough knowledge to advance without impeding us by starting with the basics and building from there.
