The daughter of former Glamorgan cricketer Steve James is believed to have contracted sepsis.

An inquest will now examine her care and treatment under Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Mr James, who was twice capped for England but now works for The Times, told friends he was “devastated” by her sudden loss while he was away covering the Six Nations.

He was at the Wales v Ireland match in Dublin and due to the weather he was unable to fly home to see her before he died.

In a heartfelt tribute at the time, Mr James and his wife Jane wrote on Twitter: “We have the most indescribably devastating news that our beautiful daughter Bethan passed away suddenly on Saturday night.

“Our hearts are broken. She was an incredibly caring and kind daughter and sister to Rhys.”

A pre-inquest hearing in Pontypridd, south Wales, was told yesterday that the medical cause of her death was likely to be sepsis.

Coroner Patricia Morgan said a full inquest would examine how Bethan came to her death.

This will include her medical history as well as her treatment under Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in the two weeks leading up to her death.

No date has been set for the full hearing.

Bethan lived in Cardiff while studying at university and living with Crohn’s disease.

She was sick, but her loved ones were unaware that she could have contracted sepsis.

Bethan has been battling the disease since she was three, had heart problems and underwent bowel surgery.

She was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2019, but vowed to fight the disease and raise awareness to help others.

In a blog post ahead of a family holiday at Center Parcs, she told followers: “I can’t tell you how excited I am for 2020!!!

“I have a feeling this is going to be the craziest year of my life, and hopefully my best!!

“I can’t wait to get started, I’m going to start the year in an extremely good place with the best people around me.”
