Dave Martell has dedicated more than 35 years of his life as a professional musician and school band teacher. During his illustrious career, he was privileged to share the stage with such esteemed artists as Jimmy Heath, Lou Rawls, Cab Calloway, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Johnny Mathis, Lou Rawls, Burt Bacharach, Pete Escovedo and Earl Hines.
His musical talents have extended to recording collaborations with notable ensembles including the Asian American Orchestra, Wayne Wallace, Ray Brown’s Great Big Band, Dave Eshelman’s Jazz Garden Band, Black Market Jazz Orchestra and the Desolation Angels. Dave continued his education in music, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal State University in Los Angeles and an Associate of Arts degree from Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, California.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, he earned a music teaching degree from Cal State East Bay, where he received guidance from instructors Dan Livesay and Roy Main. For an extraordinary 27 years, Dave served as a music instructor in the New Haven Unified School District. The devastating news came when police arrived at Mischelle Martell’s door at 3:20am, informing him that Dave had been involved in a horrific solo vehicle accident and had not survived. Despite the overwhelming sadness, there is comfort in knowing that Dave was engaged in an activity he loved at the time of his death. He died in a self-inflicted accident.
Dave Martell was a highly successful musician and educator, with a career spanning over 35 years. It gives me some comfort to know that at the time of his death he was following his passion. He died in an accident with a solo vehicle. Bob Athayde, director of the Lafayette Summer Music Workshop, released the following statement about Dave’s untimely death.
“For me, and probably for you who knew him well, there is a huge void in my world. It comforts me that he made me laugh many times. Dave was a driving force whether he was teaching at LafSMW or on stage. My thoughts are positive for Dave’s family.”
