He had no desire to go to war at all. He received the draft notice from him at the height of the Vietnam War. He joined the Army instead of the infantry because he didn’t want to serve in the infantry, and in Vietnam he was a gunner on a Brown Water Black Beret riverboat.

David was charred beyond recognition eight months into his tour of duty in Vietnam when a phosphorus grenade he was about to throw exploded in his fingers.
