The Dave Roever Story
He had no desire to go to war at all. He received the draft notice from him at the height of the Vietnam War. He joined the Army instead of the infantry because he didn’t want to serve in the infantry, and in Vietnam he was a gunner on a Brown Water Black Beret riverboat.
David was charred beyond recognition eight months into his tour of duty in Vietnam when a phosphorus grenade he was about to throw exploded in his fingers. Due to that incident, he spent fourteen months in the hospital and underwent numerous major operations. The miracle of life and survival of him.
He is an excellent communicator and has spoken at a variety of venues, including businesses, men’s and youth conventions, public schools, and military installations. Dave frequently appears on national television chat shows. He founded and continues to work missions in Vietnam and other countries.
He talks about issues important to his audience and offers practical solutions using examples from his own life. Dave creates a story of strength, loyalty and survival that touches and changes those who listen. He often draws on his combative experiences of loneliness, peer pressure, disfigurement, and suffering, as well as life’s successes. His faith and the positive relationships he has with his parents, wife, children, and grandchildren are the cornerstone of his hope.
The Department of the Navy made up for their mistake by presenting Dave with his Purple Heart and several additional service medals 34 years after his injuries. In recognition of Dave’s incredible life and contributions, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in May 2005.
