Was David Bloom Jewish? He was, indeed. Bloom was born into a family of social workers and second-generation Jews in Indianapolis, Indiana. The couple’s daughter, Lucille, was born two years earlier. Bloom was thirteen when he read an article in Reader’s Digest about the University of Chicago and informed his parents that he wanted to attend there. His parents, on the other hand, thought it was unreasonable and did not encourage his dreams.
His parents met a surgeon whose son enrolled in the University of Chicago’s humanities program for gifted children after moving to Chicago in 1944. Bloom began working on his degree when he was fifteen, after being accepted into the same program in 1946. and spent the next 10 years studying there. Since then, his enthusiasm for the “idea” of the University has grown.
