David Foster celebrates the beautiful bonds in his family.
The legendary music producer, 74, spoke with PEOPLE at the Billboard Official Golden Globe After Party on Sunday, where he addressed the recent controversy surrounding his status as a father of six.
The commentary began when Foster shared a video on Instagram on Friday of his 2-year-old son Rennie drumming along to Michael Jackson’s hit “Rock With You.” Comments on the post were full of praise for Rennie’s musical talent, but one Instagram user took the opportunity to criticize his parenting.
“Lol!!!! He’s a dad…..he also has daughters (whom he abandoned) older than me,” the user wrote in a reply to someone else.

Foster tells PEOPLE he “didn’t see” the comments, but continued to praise his relationship with his five grown children — Allison, 53, Amy, 50, Sara, 42, Erin, 41, and Jordan, 37.

David Foster says it’s ‘a bit different’ raising a toddler at 73: ‘I can offer him wisdom’
“My kids are great and, obviously, this is a unique situation, probably one that none of us planned for, but my daughters are great, all of them are, all five of them are great,” Foster says of Amy coming to his defense.
“They’ve embraced Rennie and that’s actually great,” she adds, explaining that the family is trying to “do everything they can” to keep their bond strong.
“We travel a lot, but we do our best and it works really well,” he says.
“All my daughters are self-sufficient. They’re all making their own way. They’re all doing great. So I’m really proud of all of them, and of Rennie. So he’s the center of attention right now.”
Foster also shared some more insight into how Rennie is developing his drumming skills, which the proud father’s wife, Katharine McPhee Foster, caught on camera.
“He was on the road with us when we were on tour, my wife and I, and he was watching our drummer, JR Robinson, who’s an amazing drummer, and he started watching him when he was 14, 15 months old, and then Just Alone started playing and banging and just slowly but surely,” Foster tells PEOPLE.
“Then the video that went viral was him just playing there and I was trying to teach him a lesson, and Kat heard it from the other room, so she just walked in. So it’s very impromptu,” he explains. .
“Usually he would stop playing if he saw a camera, but he kind of walked away and then just kept playing. It was kind of cool.”
The producer plans to give his little one “every opportunity” to pursue music if he chooses to, “but I’m not going to be fanatical about it.”
“I’m not going crazy about it,” he says. – If one day it stops, so be it.
