David Njoku Reveals He Decided to Post Photos of His Facial Burns After Messages From Other Burn Victims

David Njoku talks openly about why he decided to share photos of his facial burns.

On Thursday, the Cleveland Browns tight end, 27, shared an Instagram post that included two selfies showing the extent of the injuries he suffered in a domestic accident earlier this month.

In a new Browns locker room interview with Cleveland.com, the NFL player revealed why he decided to release photos of his injuries so soon after the incident.

Njoku said he was “getting a lot of messages from other burn victims and nurses who have burn victims.”

“They were telling me how everyone feels embarrassed to show anything,” he continued. “So I just wanted to come out and show off to make everybody feel a little bit better.”

“At the end of the day, things heal,” he added.

After missing Wednesday and Thursday, the tight end returned to practice on Friday and the team currently has him on the questionable list, Cleveland.com reported.

“The way I see it, all the pain and suffering from training in the off-season is far worse than all of this,” he told the news outlet. “We really push ourselves hard to strive to be great. So a little burn isn’t going to stop me.”

“The fact that I’m still breathing, I still have my vision and everything,” he said, adding that “mentally [I] feel great.”

Reflecting on the incident on Friday, Njoku told the newspaper: “When it happened, my eyes were open, so I saw everything and I really should have been blind. So luckily I didn’t. So yes, I give all the glory to God.”

Njoku’s Instagram post marked the first time he has shown his face in public since the Sept. 29 incident, which occurred while he was lighting a fire in his backyard, ESPN reported.

Just four days after suffering facial burns, the tight end arrived at Cleveland Browns Stadium wearing an alien-inspired mask that covered everything but his eyes.

Until the game, it was not clear whether Njoku would join his team on the field.

A day before he was scheduled to play against the Baltimore Ravens, the Browns announced he was added to the team’s injury report, and tight end Zaire Mitchell-Paden was activated from the Browns practice squad to potentially take his place.

He was listed as questionable “after suffering burns to his face and hand during a domestic accident,” the team said in a statement on its website.

While Njoku lived up to his claims, taking the field Sunday and making several big catches over the middle, the Browns ended up losing to the Ravens 28-3.

Earlier this week, Njoku also shared in an Instagram post that he is launching a line of T-shirts — emblazoned with a graphic of him arriving at the stadium in an alien mask — called “Withstand.”

A portion of the money from each sale would be donated to the American Burn Association, he said.

The Browns will next face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, October 15th in Cleveland.
