David Oyelowo Recalls Filming with Kaley Cuoco Before She Announced Pregnancy: ‘I Had to Keep This Secret’

Outside of Kaley Cuoco’s immediate family, David Oyelowo may have been the first person to know the actress was pregnant.

While at Club SI in Las Vegas for the F1 race on Friday, Oyelowo, 47, spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about his upcoming film with Cuoco, Role playingwhich is scheduled to be released on Prime in January.

According to the actor, when the duo was filming the movie, Cuoco (37) didn’t tell anyone she was expecting, but the signs were there. “We did this scene in a hotel, an abandoned hotel, which you could tell was no longer in use because it smelled. Anyone who has been around someone who is pregnant, their sense of smell goes through the roof,” explained Oyelowo. “She was just sick from the smell of this corridor. So every time we’d do a scene and call Cut, she’d say, ‘Do you feel that? Is that bad?’ — Oyelowo noticed it then Big Bang Theory alum would actually spray perfume on her arm to smell it, and while he initially thought Cuoc’s actions were “weird,” he then wondered if something was going on. “It got so weird that she ended up having to tell me she was pregnant and then I had to keep this secret,” he said. “So it’s something that probably shouldn’t have happened, but it did, and it was very funny.”

Cuoco and fiancé Tom Pelphrey welcomed daughter Matilda earlier this year on March 30.

The couple announced the birth of their first child on April 1, calling her “the new light of our lives” alongside a series of family photos they shared on Instagram at the time.

Recalling the moment Cuoco told him he was expecting Matilda, Oyelowo said he was filled with emotion. “She told me that, and I started crying, and it was completely inappropriate for the scene,” he said. “That should have been a scene where I definitely shouldn’t have cried.” “She’s a great human being,” Oyelowo added of Cuoco.

Oyelowo also described his first experience meeting Cuoco, telling PEOPLE, “She presented me with 20 questions that I had to answer so we could get to know each other right away and we had to ask each other those questions.”

“But that’s just her. She’s a walking, living, breathing human icebreaker. Wherever she goes, it’s like she breaks all reserves,” Oyelowo added. “She’s just cheerful.”
