News about David Rathband

One day after Raoul Moat escaped after shooting Samantha Stobbart and Chris Brown, 42-year-old traffic police officer David Rathband sat in his patrol car near East Denton, Tyne and Wear. Twelve minutes after Moat called 999 to declare war on the police for that day, the officer was shot in the face as he approached Rathband’s car.” I felt nothing, no emotion, as he looked into his eyes. I then experienced severe facial agony,” Rathband told The Sun. “I knew my eye had just disappeared and my right eye socket had exploded.

When David Rathband was taken to Newcastle General Hospital, he suffered serious head and upper body injuries. Moat contacted police again just 50 minutes later, ignoring the officer, according to The Guardian. Rathband was in the hospital for 17 days. He had more than 200 shotgun pellets left in his skull and he also lost sight in both eyes.

Unfortunately, David never recovered from his injuries and admitted to having suicidal thoughts a year after the shooting. In an interview, he claimed that “I’m not a robot, I was seriously affected by what happened” (via The Sun). I have to wait and see, but as long as I have enough confidence to continue.

David Rathband was discovered hanged at his Blyth home on 29 February 2012, some 18 months after he was shot dead by Moat. He later divorced his wife Kath, with whom he had two children.

He claimed that David often complained to him that [police] the serve had him jumping through hoops after being hit. “They’re fighting each other over your money. They refused to pay for a particular cane he needed to walk. After he was shot, he needed dental care, but they weren’t willing to cover the cost. I think the year will wait for some specialist counseling contributed to his eventual collapse and suicide.

“We are committed to supporting all officers who are injured in the line of duty.”

Before leaving the UK, David visited Darren, who moved to Australia in 2008. Before leaving, David sent several distressing tweets, including one that read: “I lost my sight, my career, my wife and my marriage… On Monday I return and say goodbye to my children.
