She is the 86-year-old widow of M. Karunanidhi. Born in 1936 in Tamil Nadu, India.
She is a businesswoman. She was only 12 years old when she married M. Karunanidhi.

The couple has four children. She has 3 sons: MK Alagiri (politician), MK Stalin (politician), MK Tamilarasu (producer) and a daughter: Selvi Geetha Kovilam.
Karunanidhi’s happy married life was marred in the 1960s when she married Rajathi Ammal in a secret ceremony. Although this is considered an illegal marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
Dayalu is the stepmother of MK Muthu (stepson with Padmavathy) and Kanimozhi (stepdaughter with Rajathi politician).
After the 2016 Assembly elections, her son MK Stalin emerged as Mr Karunanidhi’s political successor.

- In 2015, Dayalu and 18 others, including DMK MP Kanimozhi and former telecom minister A Raja, faced trial in an Enforcement Directorate (ED) case alleging illegal gratification of Rs 200 crore from Swan promoters through indirect means to Kalaignar TV. Telecommunications Private Limited (STPL). Her doctors said it was impossible for her to be involved in the money laundering case because she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and had been in poor health for years. In 2017, a special CBI court acquitted all the accused and Dayalu in the money laundering case.
