Facebook preserves many precious moments and memories of so many people. Keep making memories and sharing them on Facebook so your friends and family can see them too. You can also remember all those special moments every time you log into your Facebook account and look at those pictures. But have you ever thought about what happens to your Facebook account when you die? Nobody really wants to think about it. Facebook handles this too and has a corresponding policy of flagging a deceased person’s Facebook account.
If someone in your family or Facebook friend has passed away and their account is still active, here are the options available.
- legacy contacts
Inherited contacts are those that the deceased person chose before their death. This could be a family member or friend who can manage the person’s account after his death.
Legacy contacts are:
- You are allowed to pin a post to the top of the deceased person’s timeline, update your profile photo and cover photo, and respond to new friend requests. They can also download an archive of a user’s photos, timeline posts, and profile information with the deceased user’s prior permission.
- They will not be able to log in to the account of the deceased user, see their private information, such as messages on Facebook. I can’t delete this person’s posts, photos, or friends.
To select a legacy contact, you must follow these steps:
- Log in to your Facebook account and go to the settings section.
- Under ‘Security’, select ‘Legacy Contact’.
- Then click ‘Edit’, enter your friend or family member’s name and click ‘Add’.
- You can then inform the selected person of your decision, as they will be the one asking Facebook to mention their account.
- Once you’ve done this, you can decide if you want them to download a copy of your Facebook account with data file permission. If so, click the check box, and then click Close.
If you don’t want to choose a legacy contact before you die, no one will be able to manage your Facebook account and they can only bookmark it.
- tag someone’s facebook account
Now, if a person passed away without setting up a legacy contact, you can still ask Facebook to memorialize your account. Facebook knows how important a profile is to the family and friends of a deceased person.
Facebook reviews applications, but the applicant does not have to be an executor or family member. Anyone can submit an application form. This is done to ensure that the marking is done at the right time.
How to bookmark a Facebook account?
You can do this by filling out the form in the help section and asking Facebook to memorialize the account. Once approved by Facebook, the account is restricted to friends only and sensitive data, if any, is removed. However, the profile and wall will remain active so friends and family can post memories and express their condolences.
The word ‘Souvenir’ will be used before the name of the commemorative bead. The account will not appear in Facebook ads, in the People You May Know section, and will not be sent birthday reminders. This also prevents account hacking as memorial accounts cannot be logged in at any time.
Deleting a memorial account
An immediate family member of a deceased person can also ask Facebook to remove their profile entirely.
To do this, you must fill out the Special request for a deceased person’s account form. You will need to provide the deceased person’s full name, email address, date of death, and their timeline URL. You will also need to provide proof that you are an immediate family member by showing a birth certificate, death certificate, or proof of authorization.
Download Memorial Account Information
A deceased person can specify in their will who will access their Facebook account data, and Facebook will honor their decision. Those instructed by the deceased may download account information upon presentation of a prior authorization or court order.
How to bookmark a Facebook page?
There is no specific procedure you need to follow that allows you to bookmark your Facebook page. Once a Facebook account is commemorated and no one has access to it, the linked Pages will remain there, but there will be no activity on them. In case the relatives or friends of the deceased person have requested the deletion of the Facebook account in question, the associated Facebook pages will also be deleted.
Contact Facebook Help if you were unable to memorialize a (deceased) family member’s Facebook account.
