Deborah Gist Bio
She began her career as a college professor, majoring in early childhood education at the University of Oklahoma. He holds two master’s degrees – one in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and one in elementary education and curriculum from the University of South Florida. She also received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.
She is a native of Tulsa and a graduate of TPS Memorial High School. She came back to Tulsa because she liked it and has worked as a team leader for Tulsa Public Schools for the past seven years.
For her efforts in Rhode Island, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. According to her TPS biography, Gist claimed that traveling 180 miles to the state capitol to lobby for funding increases that would further help teachers and students was her most fulfilling experience.
Gist is an active Tulsan who serves on the board of Greenwood Rising as well as the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Commission. She is also a board member of the Boy Scouts of America, Tulsa Area United Way, Junior Achievement of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, and Junior Achievement of Oklahoma.
She is one of the founders of Chiefs for Change, a group dedicated to encouraging good and diverse education in nearby school districts. Since July 2015, Gist has served as superintendent, earning multiple scholarships and honors for TPS. After an ongoing conflict between the district and state Superintendent Ryan Walters over accreditation difficulties, she decided to leave TPS. Walters has been a staunch opponent of Gist holding her responsible for TPS’ problems.

Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist unexpectedly announced her resignation today after weeks of heated disagreements with state Superintendent Ryan Walters, who local school leaders suspected wanted to take over the district.
It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to step down as supervisor, Gist wrote in a text message to KRMG morning news anchor Dan Potter. I will announce this afternoon to our colleagues and family. The special board meeting on Wednesday night will be used to discuss my departure and interim position.
Her decision, she continued, “offers the best opportunity to keep control of our schools in Tulsa, aligned with the values of our community.” In her statement, Gist promised to “have more to share soon.”
In a statement about her departure, Tulsa Mayor GT Bynum said, “I am extremely grateful for Dr. Deborah Gist’s service to our city. Just last week, he acted as a mediator of sorts during what he said was a cordial and fruitful meeting between Gist and Walters. While serving as superintendent of Tulsa Public Schools, Dr. Gist overcame some of the biggest obstacles facing the city’s children, including low teacher compensation that made it difficult for us to compete with other states and a lack of adequate facilities.
She was always ready to challenge authority on behalf of the children she devoted her life to helping. I would like to thank Dr. Gist for what she has done for Tulsa on their behalf as well as on behalf of our community.
The State School Board is expected to decide whether or not to accredit Tulsa Public Schools at its meeting Thursday.
