In his book Credible: Why We Suspect Accusers and Protect Abusers, Tuerkheimer examines the role credibility plays in both the legal system and popular culture.
When victims of abuse, especially marginalized victims, come forward with charges, Tuerkheimer said: “I’m talking about what I call ‘discrediting,’ which is what often happens, and the ways in which our culture and our law are geared to devalue the word of that person.”

He argued that while our society is becoming more aware of reports of abuse, it is still unclear how to respond to them.
Tuerkheimer wants to change the way people talk about sexual assault and harassment and foster a climate where victims are believed. He talked to many survivors to include his perspective in his book. Tuerkheimer noticed a pattern in these dialogues about the effect of credibility on survivors.
