Profession

At the age of 5, Deepak’s father noticed his interest in sports. Therefore, his father enrolled him in Akada Shaheed Bhagat Singh Wrestling Training Center at Kushti Academy in Mirchipur, Hisar. He then started training under coach Ajay Dhanda, after which he started participating in various wrestling tournaments such as the Junior World Wrestling Championship (2021) and the Senior Under-23 Asian Championship. In 2022, he participated in the World Ranking Series and won a bronze medal. Deepak won the bronze medal in the men’s 97kg freestyle category at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games (2022). He defeated Pakistani wrestler Tayyab Raza Awan with a score of 10-2. After winning, Deepak said,

I want to thank God. This was my first competition and I won a medal. I will try to win a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. I came for the medal and I earned it. “

  • Deepak was born into a poor family. Deepak spoke about the same in an interview and said:

    My father Surinder Singh Nehra was a farmer and studied till 12th grade while my mother Mukesh Kumari was a housewife and studied Grade 10. We didn’t have a television and our neighbors used to tell my family if I won or lost the game. “

  • His favorite wrestling moves are the “double leg” and the “ankle tie.”
  • He revealed in an interview that he would practice eight hours a day before participating in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
