Delta Air Lines’ new rule has garnered a lot of attention online.
The airline released a two-page memo earlier this month detailing “appearance requirements” for job seekers who want to join the company as flight attendants.
Specifically outlining how potential employees should look during interviews, during training and throughout their careers, Delta outlined its requirements for grooming, hair, jewelry and clothing — as well as underwear.
Prospective employees and current flight attendants must wear “appropriate undergarments,” although they “must not be visible,” the memo said.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Delta said, “In the interest of transparency and clarity for all prospective applicants, we encourage people to ‘dress for success’ and make a great first impression as they seek to become a flight attendant.”

Delta Air Lines has secret exchange cards that have been around for 2 decades — Here’s how to win one!
As for the grooming requirements set forth by Delta, the memo states that “personal cleanliness and hygiene must be maintained at all times” and notes that eyelashes “should look natural” and “all nails must be the same color.”
“Visible tattoos are not permitted and must be covered with clothing or waterproof makeup. Bandages are not suitable for covering tattoos at any time,” the memo added.
As for hair, Delta said attendants must have a “natural-looking” color with “no strong highlights or unnatural hues.” If their hair is longer than their shoulders, it must be “pulled completely back and secured away from the eyes.” However, if it still reaches over the middle of the back, it should be fastened.

Meanwhile, the airline accepts jewelry, but not without some conditions.
“One side stud nose piercing is permitted. Only gold, silver, white pearl or clear diamonds/diamond-like diamonds,” the memo said. “No other piercings on the face or body are allowed.”
Flight attendants are allowed to wear “no more than two earrings per ear”, and they must be “no larger than a dime”. Hoop earrings and ear stretch gauges are not permitted, the airline said.

Delta will now only allow flight attendants to wear American flag pins in a uniform policy change
Despite the many rules related to how flight attendants must present themselves, Delta wrote in a memo: “We will work with you to accommodate a particular style of dress or physical appearance in accordance with religious beliefs or practices, unless it creates a safety hazard or other unnecessary burden on the company.”
The airline also said that swearing, chewing gum and using phones or headphones are not allowed during the day of the interview.
On the Reddit forum where the requests were shared, many users reacted to the guidelines. “I want to know what happened they sent this lol,” one user wrote, while another said, “The fact they even had to send this … 👀.”
Others, meanwhile, agreed that Delta was right to set the expectations, with one commenter stating, “I don’t see anything wrong with this. It’s mostly for hygiene and safety. A clean, neat professional look.”
Another noted: “The fact that they have to put it in a letter to prospective new hires says more about the candidates than [Delta].”
