In a 113-111 victory over the Lakers at the Crypto.com Arena, two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Jokic finished with 30 points as the Nuggets overcame a 15-point halftime deficit to knock LeBron James and the Lakers out of the playoffs.
James scored 31 points in an incredible first half performance that gave the 17-time NBA champions a 73-58 lead at the break, giving it the appearance that he was holding the Lakers’ season together by himself.
Jokic, however, helped the Nuggets offence pick up steam in the third quarter, scoring 13 points as the top seeds in the Western Conference beat the Lakers 36-16 to turn the game around.
With 51.7 seconds left in a thrilling fourth quarter, Jokic drove a layup through heavy traffic to give Denver a 113-111 lead.
James had one more opportunity to level the score and force OT with four seconds left, but Aaron Gordon of Denver rejected James’ attempted driving floater, allowing the Nuggets to celebrate a historic victory.
Denver, one of 11 teams in the league without an NBA title, will play either the Miami Heat or Boston Celtics in the championship game. “We don’t give up,” Jokic said to ESPN.
