Derek Joseph Zenk, born February 3, 1991 in Brookings, South Dakota, was the beloved child of Fred and Cynthia (Cuppy) Zenk. His upbringing in Webster, South Dakota instilled in him strong values and a deep connection to his faith.
As evidence of his spiritual journey, he was baptized at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arlington and later confirmed at Christ the King Catholic Church in Webster. Growing up, he attended school in Webster, graduating in 2009. His pursuit of knowledge led him to South Dakota State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture.
During his time at South Dakota State, Derek created countless fond memories that he often held dear. He has dedicated himself to a variety of endeavors, serving as an Alpha Gamma Rho Noble Ruler, making notable contributions to the University’s Crop Evaluation Team and Meat Lab, serving as an ambassador for the College of Ag/Bio, and playing an important role on the Little International Executive Committee.
During his studies at university, Derek was lucky enough to meet his beautiful bride, a memory he held close to his heart.
On June 21, 2014, Derek entered holy matrimony with Megan Peters in St. to Thomas More in Brookings. Together, they created a warm and nurturing environment on the Zenk family farm, where they lovingly raised their three wonderful children, Sawyer, Sutton and Sage, with the joyful anticipation of welcoming baby girl Zenk in September.
Derek was a devout member of Christ the King Catholic Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus. He was employed professionally at the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service office in Aberdeen, where he devoted his talents and skills.
Remembered for his honest and compassionate nature, Derek possessed a heart full of sincerity. His warm and comforting hugs provided comfort to those who needed it. He exuded unwavering devotion, touching the lives of all who crossed his path with his genuine care and love. Derek found solace and joy in fishing, a passion that followed him from early childhood.
Whether it was sharing the experience with friends, young nieces and nephews, or seeking solitude, he found solace in casting his line. Derek also enjoyed the timeless tunes of old country music and enjoyed the joy of dancing, the jitterbug being his personal favorite.
Being outdoors brought him immense happiness, whether he was looking for pheasants, tending flocks, planting trees or simply enjoying the presence of his children. Above all, his favorite moments were those he spent in the arms of his family.

He will be greatly missed by his parents, Fred and Cindy Zenk of Webster, SD, as well as his siblings Crissa (Justin) Fruechte of Pipestone, MN, Kyla (JD) Deranleau of Belle Fourche, SD, and Daniel (Kaela Jo) Zenk of Britton, SD.
Derek’s passing also leaves a void in the lives of his grandmothers Judy Zenk of Webster, SD, and Darleen Cuppy of Wessington Springs, SD, his mother-in-law Connie Peters of Mapleton, MN, and his sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and best friend Kendal Nilson . He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Donald Zenk and Howard Cuppy, his father-in-law Russell Peters and his nephew Brayden Fruechte.
