Detroit Pistons Have to Ride the Subway to Make It to Brooklyn Game on Time: 'Only in New York'

The Detroit Pistons just commuted to work like any New Yorker – on the subway.

On Sunday, November 3rd, the basketball team took the New York City subway transit system to their 3:30pm game at the Barclays Center against the Brooklyn Nets, all because of the massive traffic jam caused by the New York Marathon.

The team’s official Instagram account shared videos and photos from their relatable journey as NBA players hopped on the 3 train line. “The NYC Marathon took us on a detour…” read the caption of the Instagram video.

The video showed the team on the road among other straphangers and followed the athletes as they eventually exited the train, having to duck under the subway threshold.

Another post shows the team huddled on subway benches “like the Barclays Center in New York.” The Pistons also shared a selfie while waiting on a subway platform on X (formerly Twitter).

The fans were entertained by a basketball team riding the city’s public transport. “Classic! Welcome to NYC!!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽,” one person wrote. “Hilarious 😂 only in NY,” said another, while a third fan noted that the team “got that real NYC experience! 😍.”

The New York City Marathon, which this year drew more than 50,000 people from around the world, closed many major avenues in the five boroughs, likely affecting the Pistons’ planned route to their game in Brooklyn.

The Pistons won the game 106-92 against the Nets, prompting fans to call for the team to take public transportation to all of their games. “Subway should maybe become a pre-game ritual 👀,” one fan posted.

“The Pistons are undefeated when they ride the New York subway,” joked another. “Pistons are winning Detroit needs a subway now,” said a third.

The Athletic predicted in October that the Pistons, a historically underperforming team, would “exceed expectations” this coming season. They haven’t won a playoff game since 2008 and have only made the playoffs three times in the last 15 years.

Train 3 could change that.
