Why is Dhanteras celebrated?

Dhanteras signifies the worship of Dhanvantari. Dhanvantari, appeared during the Samudra Manthana, holding a pot full of amrita (nectar that bestows immortality) in one hand and a sacred text on Ayurveda in the other.
