IT Raid 2023
On December 6, 2023, the Income Tax Department launched a marathon raid against Boudh Distillery Private Limited, an Odisha-based distillery company, and its promoters on charges of tax evasion and unaccounted transactions. The distillery is owned by Dhiraj Prasad Sahu and his family. Total Rs. Rs 351 crore in cash was found at Dhiraj Prasad Sahu’s residence in Ranchi. Sabalpur, Bolangir, Titilagarh, Budh, Sudargarh, Rourkela and Bhubaneswar were also attacked. According to some reports, this is the largest cash seizure ever by an Indian agency against a single group and its associated businesses.
Later, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh issued a statement on the issue and said:
The Indian National Congress has no connection with MP Dheeraj Sahu’s business. Only he can explain, and should explain, the huge amount of cash reportedly unearthed from his estate by the income tax authorities. “
Other BJP members have accused Dheeraj of abuse of power and his close relationship with Rahul Gandhi. Deepak Prakash, former state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party and member of the Lok Sabha, said,
This corruption would not have been possible without the support of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha government that runs the state. Congress has a close relationship with corruption. Whenever the Congress comes to power, whether at the Center or in the states, corruption is rampant. Dhiraj Sahu is close to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. “
During the proceedings of the case, an old tweet posted by Dhiraj Prasad Sahu in August 2022 went viral on social media, in which he expressed his views on the prevalence of black money in the country even after demonetisation.
