rebellion in punjab
In the aftermath of Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, Bit Singh was sworn in as Chief Minister of Punjab in 1992. At the time, well-armed Sikh separatists in terrorism-ridden Punjab province had been fighting for an independent homeland in Khalistan for nearly 12 years. While serving in the Punjab Police Force, Dilawal Singh joined one of the separatist groups called Babar Khalsa International (BKI). From June 9, 1993 to September 18, 1994, he served as Special Operations Officer in Fatehgarh Sahib district. As a special operations officer, he witnessed government-sanctioned counterterrorism operations in which Punjab police carried out multiple extrajudicial killings and illegal detentions of young Sikhs. By November 1994, the Punjab government fired several special operations officers across the state, including Dilawar Singh. Through this dismissal, Dilawar Singh realized that the government hired the SPO only to massacre innocent Sikh youths in the name of anti-terrorism operations. These events infuriated Dilawar, who then volunteered to assassinate Punjab Chief Minister Bit Singh. Although Bit Singh succeeded in reducing terrorism in Punjab and restoring overall respect for Sikhs in the country that had been lost after Indira Gandhi’s assassination, he was accused of sanctioning fake killings, kidnappings during the Punjab insurgency and secret cremations, at a time when the government was taking action. Trying to get rid of Khalistan militants. Thereafter, Dilawal rented a one-room accommodation at a secluded place in Latoli village of Tehsil Rajgarh in Sirmur district around May or June 1995, where he held a meeting with other co-conspirators of the BKI over the assassination. Meeting.
Bint Singh Assassination
On August 31, 1995, Dilawar Singh and backup bomber Balwant Singh Rajoana traveled in a freshly painted white Ambassador car with a Delhi license plate, arriving at the Secretariat building in Chandigarh. Dilawar Singh was wearing a Punjab police uniform and had 1.5 kilograms of explosives in a belt-like belt around his waist. After a while, after Balwant left, Dilawar wrote a couplet in Gurmukhi on a piece of paper, which read:
Je mein shaheedan di yaad wich geet na gaaye, teh ohna diyan ruhan Kuralun giyan” (If I do not recite rhymes in memory of the martyrs, their souls will be tortured).
At 5:10 p.m., three white ambassadors stopped to pick up the prime minister near the VIP porch of the Secretariat building. Just as Bit Singh was about to get into his car, Dilawal walked towards his bullet-proof vehicle and pressed the bomb button. In addition to Bit Singh, the explosion also claimed the lives of 17 other people, including three Indian commandos and Bit Singh’s close friend Ranchod Singh Mann. The BKI subsequently claimed responsibility for Bit Singh’s death and blamed the deep-rooted criminal conspiracy on the wanton atrocities committed against innocent Sikhs during his tenure as Chief Minister.
The aftermath of the assassination
In September 1995, the Chandigarh police recovered an abandoned Ambassador car bearing a Delhi number and arrested the first criminal, Lakhwinder Singh. By February 1996, the police identified other conspirators: Gurmeet Singh, Naseeb Singh, Navjot Singh, Jagtar Singh Tara, Shamsher Singh, Jagtar Singh Hawara, Balwant Singh Rajoana and Paramjit Singh Bheora. On December 25, 1997, Balwant Singh Rajoana admitted his involvement in the murder of Beant Singh before a makeshift court in Brier Jail, Chandigarh. Before being silenced, he raised slogans in support of Khalistani,
Khalistan Zindabad, Badi Rawal Singh Zindabad! “
His confession shocked prison authorities and reporters, who then asked Lajoana: “Why would someone want to give up his life at a time like this?” LaJoana replied:
Tusi key jano dosti kinj nebhai jandi hai. ” (How do you know how to achieve friendship?)
Apparently, Dilawal and Balwant decided who would be the suicide bomber by tossing a coin. So when Dilawal won the fatal throw and agreed to sacrifice his life, he asked Balwant Singh to admit his involvement in the crime when the time came.
