Muhammad Yusuf Khan, also known as Dilip Kumar, was born on December 11, 1922 in Peshawar, British India (now Pakistan) to a Muslim family (at the time of his death He died at the age of 98). His father was a fruit merchant and owned an orchard in Peshawar. Muhammad Yusuf Khan was sent to Nasik, Maharashtra for primary education, where he met another future Bollywood star, Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor became a close friend.
In 1940, at the age of 18, he fled to Pune (now Pune, Maharashtra) after a dispute with his father. With good English speaking and writing skills, he successfully found a job.
He set up a sandwich stall at the Army Club in Pune. After the contract ended, he moved to Mumbai with his savings of Rs 5,000. In 1942, he met Dr. Masani, who took him to Bombay Talkies in Malad, where he met actress and Bombay Talkies owner Devika Rani. Devika Rani asked him to sign a contract with Bombay Talkies with a salary of Rs 1250 per month. Devika Rani asked him to change his name to Dilip Kumar.
Later, he met actor Ashok Kumar, who influenced his acting style and told him to behave naturally.

During his initial days in Bollywood, he bonded with former actress Kamini Kaushal.
