Dismembered Human Body Discovered on New York City Beach: Police

A headless, armless torso was found on Breezy Point Beach in Queens on Friday

A dismembered human body without a head and arms was discovered this week along a beach in New York.

The New York Police Department responded to a call at 12:21 a.m. Friday about the discovery of a torso at Breezy Point Beach – located in the borough of Queens.

An “unidentified” torso was discovered with “legs joined” on the sand, the NYPD said in a statement. It did not appear that the head or arms were attached to the exposed torso.

Additional information was not immediately available Saturday. The investigation is ongoing, according to the NYPD.

“A pathologist will determine the cause of death,” the department’s statement added. “The identity of the deceased is pending proper family notification.”

The discovery of the torso comes a week after a Los Angeles man was arrested when a dismembered torso was found in a dumpster. Multiple media outlets reported at the time that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said parts of a human body were found in a parking lot near Ventura Boulevard and Rubio Avenue.

“When officers responded, they discovered a dismembered female wrapped in a plastic bag. It was right in front of the dumpster, they confirmed it was human remains,” LAPD Detective Efren Gutierrez told NBC Los Angeles at the time.

“If a homicide suspect dismembers a body, it’s to delay identification,” Guttierez told KTLA.

After reviewing surveillance footage, detectives began investigating the suspect, Samuel Haskell, KABC-TV reports. Gutierrez also reportedly told reporters that investigators found “evidence of blood and other items” in the home the suspect shared with his wife Mei and their three children. Haskell was later taken into custody on suspicion of murder, the paper reported.

Mei and her parents, Gaoshan Li and Yanxiang Wang, have been missing since November 6. Haskell has since been charged with three counts of murder in connection with the deaths of his wife and mother-in-law, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He is being held without bail.

“These shocking and gruesome crimes have shaken our community. We stand with the loved ones of the victims at this unimaginably difficult time and will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is served,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. “Our Serious Crime Unit will work tirelessly to bring a prosecution that reflects the seriousness of this devastating crime.”
