The latest Disney remake of the action game is underway, and this one is on an island!
Lilo & Stitchthe 2002 Walt Disney Feature Animation film, is the next fan favorite to get an adaptation that replaces beloved cartoon characters with real-life counterparts.
The Hollywood Reporter first revealed that a remake of the Hawaii-centric story was in the works in February 2018, but very few details were confirmed at the time. Five years later, his tracks were published.
Lilo & Stitch is the latest Disney film to get the animation-to-live-action treatment, next Beauty and the Beast, The lion king, Aladdin and Mulan. Disney is also working on a live game update Bambilittle mermaid, Peter Pan and recently, Moana.

In August 2024, at D23, Disney revealed the first look and release date for the live-action Lilo & Stitch. Along with the first published photo of Stitch posted on Instagram, Disney wrote, “Experiment 626 has entered the chat! #LiloAndStitch live action is coming to theaters only in summer 2025!”

According to the film’s official synopsis, Lilo and Stitch “tells the story of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. With nosy social workers and alien stalkers knocking on the door, the two bond over a shared feeling family and win.”

Who is in live action Lilo & Stitch honor?

Zach Galifianakis was the first to join the cast in February 2023. Details about his actual role have been kept under wraps, though The Wrap reported that he voices the character of Pleakley.
Galifianakis was joined in the title role of Lilo by Maia Kealoha. The newcomer from Hawaii was cast and announced in March 2023 after the studio conducted an extensive search for actors to play Lilo and her older sister.
Deadline compared Kealoha’s casting to that of Hawaiian-born Auli’i Cravalho, saying she was “reminiscent” of the then-newcomer who was chosen to voice the main character from the fictional island of Motunui in 2016. Moana.
In May 2024, Kealoha told PEOPLE about her excitement for the role. – When I found out that I was going to be Lilo, my jaw literally dropped and I couldn’t believe it – she said. “I called my dad and I said, ‘I made it! I’m Lilo! I’m Lilo!’ And then they grabbed me and we were jumping up and down.”
Recently, Sydney Elizabeth Agudong joined the cast as Nani, Lilo’s sister, while newcomer Kahiau Machado will play David Kawena, Nana’s lover and Lilo’s friend, per THR.
In April of The Hollywood Reporter announced that Chris Sanders is in final negotiations to voice the character of Stitch. Sanders, who co-wrote and directed the original film with Dean DeBlois, voiced the creature (which he also created) in the original 2002 picture and the corresponding series.

When will the live-action Lilo & Stitch be released?
When Disney gave fans their first look at live action Lilo & Stitch in August 2024 they also announced the remake’s release date: Summer 2025.
THR notes that the film will be a Disney+ feature, though it’s unclear if it will have a theatrical release.
