Why are there skulls and pumpkins on Halloween?

The celebration of Halloween has its roots in ancient Celtic traditions, specifically the holiday known as Samhain. During Samhain, which in Celtic mythology marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter, it was believed that the spirits of the deceased returned to Earth.

Skulls have been symbols of death and transience of life in many cultures. For Halloween, skulls have become a common motif representing the spiritual aspects of the holiday, reminding visitors of the world of the dead.

On the other hand, pumpkins are associated with Halloween thanks to an Irish legend about a man named Jack who tricked the devil on several occasions. According to legend, after death, Jack was condemned to wander through the darkness with burning coals in a pumpkin. The Irish then carved a turnip or pumpkin and burned it to ward off evil spirits on the eve of Samhain. When this tradition arrived in America, pumpkins, which were more abundant in the region, replaced turnips.
