The pug’s mischief turned into a hairy situation over the holidays when the family took her to the vet and discovered she had swallowed as many as 60 hair ties.
According to the BBC, the two-year-old pug, named Ham (for the Tottenham Hotspur football club, not the food), was “very quiet”. Ham’s owner, Victoria Northwood, told the outlet that this was alarming because the dog usually enjoys barking at anything that passes by the house. Concerned that something was wrong, Northwood and her family took her quiet pug to Newton Clarke Veterinary Practice.
Staff at the vet’s office took x-rays of Ham, which revealed something “weird” in her stomach. Ham was taken into surgery where a mass of “about 50 to 60 hair ribbons in total” was removed from her stomach, vet Emily Whitby told the BBC.

According to a Facebook post by Ham’s surgical team, the hair bands weighed a total of 200 grams (about 7 ounces). Ham alone weighs just 6 kilograms (about 2 pounds), according to Whitby.
“We knew she had eaten the odd hair tie because we noticed it coming out the other end, but nothing prepared us for the amount they found there,” Northwood told the BBC.
Ham has not yet fully recovered from the operation, but according to a Facebook post from Newton Clarke Veterinary Surgery, the pug is at home in Dorset and starting to cause problems again.
A dog ‘too sophisticated’ for bowls requires every meal to be eaten with a silver spoon — watch!
“We were really shocked that this could happen and we are so grateful to the vets for their vigilance and for listening to us when we went to them with a hunch that all was not well,” Northwood added. “We’re keeping a closer eye on her now – it’s a huge relief that she’s okay.”
