Dolly Parton and Linda Perry want to know what’s going on.
On Friday, the two singer-songwriters teamed up for a new cover of Perry’s band 4 Non Blonde’s 1993 hit, “What’s Up?”, which will appear on Parton’s upcoming album Rock star album.
“First of all, I love Linda Perry. Second of all, I love this song that Linda wrote,” the country superstar said in a statement about the cover, which comes with a sweet music video that shows the pair jamming together as Perry, 58, plays guitar.

Between shots of Parton, 77, and Perry in the clip, there is footage of children playing and enjoying life, with many children joining the two artists throughout the video, channeling the song’s frustrated sentiment towards the future of youth in an uncertain world.
“Third of all, I love being a part of this video to try to make people think about what’s going on in this world today,” Parton’s statement continued. “Shout out to the little kids who helped with the video! If our kids don’t make it, what will? Again I ask ‘What’s up?’ To enjoy.”
The “Jolene” musician’s admiration for Perry isn’t one-sided — the former 4 Non Blondes member was just as, if not more, excited to be working with Parton.

“How is one supposed to react when the biggest and most prolific songwriter in the world wants to cover a song YOU wrote? Her version of ‘What’s Up?’ is so good,” Perry said in a press statement. “Her singing made me feel like it was her song. There are no surprises there.”
Of course, working with Parton on the visuals of the song was also wonderful. “Being on set and shooting the video was a fun and easy experience. The vibe on set was relaxed and Dolly and I got to catch up and laugh a lot,” Perry explained. “I could go on and on, obviously I’m a fan!”
The music video for the two Songwriters Hall of Famers premiered exclusively on MTV and CMT on Friday.
Parton Rock star the album is set for release on November 17, and the rock collection also features collaborations with Miley Cyrus, Sheryl Crow, Lizzo, Elton John, Chris Stapleton, Stevie Nicks and more.
