Dominick Cruz was born in Tucson, Arizona on September 3, 1985. He and his brother were raised by their mother after their father abandoned them when he was just five years old. He graduated from Flowing Wells High School.
Cruz enjoyed football and was on his way to a football practice at school when one of the wrestling coaches saw him and invited him to wrestle because he was impressed with his physique. Cruz wrestled in high school and freestyle during the summer, but was unable to compete in college wrestling due to torn ligaments.

Dominick Cruz coached after high school while also working to cover his expenses. At the age of 19, he joined the Boxing Inc. gym. There he received instruction in boxing and martial arts. Cruz defeated Eddie Castro in his first MMA match in 2005. He quickly won the lightweight and featherweight titles and made a name for himself as a fighter.
Cruz lost to Faber, causing him to drop down a weight class. He won eight straight fights, defeating Charlie Valencia, Ian McCall, Ivan Lopez, Joseph Benavidez, Brian Bowles and Scott Jorgenson. After defeating Brian Bowles, he became the UFC bantamweight champion.
