Donald Glover and Maya Erskine Edge Closer to ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Reboot as Prime Video Sets Premiere Date

Prime Video is getting ready for release Mr. and Mrs. Smitha revamped television series based on the 2005 film by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

In a press release shared with PEOPLE, the streamer announced that the Donald Glover-led series will debut sometime in early 2024.

“Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be bound together as partners – in espionage and in marriage,” reads the official synopsis. “Paired by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and a new turning point in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show, they must fight to stay together. Because divorce is not an option in this marriage.”

Although Maya Erskine will take on the role of the titular agent, the series originally starred Glover as Mr. Smith and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Mrs. Smith.

The Bed creator and star, 36, ultimately pulled out of the project back in September 2021 due to creative differences with Community alum.

“I worked on that show for six months completely in my heart and mind and I really cared about it – I still do,” Waller-Bridge later said The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023. “And I know it will be brilliant. But sometimes it’s important to know when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of the vision. Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work.”

At the time of her departure, Prime Video echoed similar sentiments in a statement shared with PEOPLE: “We can confirm that Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover have amicably and amicably parted ways with the series.”

The streaming platform also stated that Waller-Bridge’s role will be recast as Glover “whose idea for the series first came about, continues as an EP and stars, with co-creator and executive producer Francesca Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo), who will serve as showrunner, and executive producers Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer (New Regency).”

Glover, 39, first announced the project with Waller-Bridge on his Instagram Story in February 2021, sharing a video of himself dancing before cutting to a shot of the award-winning Fleabag creator and actress.

In the video, Waller-Bridge leans against a door frame in a similar fashion to Jolie’s pose in the movie poster for the original Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
