Achyutananda Samanta was born on Wednesday, January 20, 1965 (age 58; as of 2023) in Kalalabanka, Cuttack, Odisha. His zodiac sign is Aquarius and his nickname is Sukuta. After completing his primary education from a nearby school, Achyuta started studying at Raghunathpur High School, 8 km away from his village and he used to walk 8 km to reach the school. He graduated from SCS College, Puri, Odisha and then pursued his Masters. He received his PhD in Chemistry and later in Social Sciences from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Achuta was born into a poor family in Cala Labanka. When Achyuta was four, his father Anadi Charan Samanta was killed in a train accident. After this incident, the family moved from Jamshedpur to their hometown Kalalabanka village in Cuttack. His mother’s name is Nilima Rani Samantha. He has six brothers and sisters, the youngest sister is the famous Indian writer Iti Samantha. During his childhood, Achuta and his family went hungry many days because they had no money to buy food. He was a bachelor who devoted his life to social causes.
Profession
After his father’s death, he faced serious financial problems. To support his family, he started doing menial jobs in the village. After hard work, he completed his master’s degree. Afterwards, he began teaching at a private university and attending private tutoring classes. He started his two academic institutions: Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in 1992-93 with just Rs 100 in a rented apartment. 5000 rupees. He took a loan from family and friends to run the institute, which was increased to Rs 5,000 in 1994-95. 2.5 million. He worked hard to run these colleges and make them one of the most prestigious educational institutions in India.
KISS was established to provide free education from kindergarten to post-schooling to underprivileged children and provide free accommodation and boarding facilities. Later, he founded Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), KIIT School of Management (KSOM), KIIT School of Rural Management (KSRM), KIIT School of Computer Applications (KSCA) and many other Kalinga colleges.
He is also a member of several national and international educational bodies including University Grants Commission (UGC), Executive Committee Member of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Institute of International Education (IIE), New York City, Universities Asia Pacific (AUAP) and Bangkok University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP).

- His name is recorded in the Limka Book of Records as the youngest president of an Indian university.
- When the interviewer asked him what he found most satisfying about his job, he said:
The most satisfying aspects of my journey have been my ability to use education as a tool for personal, social and cultural development; economic empowerment; and the creation of a plethora of change agents for poor and marginalized communities. The model has been admired by world leaders, policy planners, Nobel laureates, and legal luminaries. KISS was an eye-opener. It was particularly satisfying when KISS was granted special consultative status with the United Nations Organization.
- In 2018-19, he was elected to the Lok Sabha and in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Kandhamal constituency and won from the Biju Janata Dal seat.
- He transformed his hometown “Calala Banka” (a village) into a smart village.
