Dr. Charanjit Singh is an Indian politician and doctor who rose to prominence after defeating Charanjit Singh Channi, a three-time MP from Chamkaur Sahib, in the 2022 state legislative assembly elections.

Political career
Dr Charanjit Singh is an ophthalmologist and the state vice-president (Punjab) of the Doctors Union. While practicing medicine, he also devoted himself to politics and worked for the welfare of mankind. Initially, he became a member of the Indian National Congress and served as secretary of the Punjab Congress Committee (PPCC). Dr. Charanjit Singh has been associated with the SC wing of Congress for many years. Later, he joined. In 2017, Dr. Singh ran against Charney but lost by 12,308 votes. In the 2017 state assembly elections, Dr. Singh secured 34% of the votes while Charni secured 42% of the votes. Dr. Singh, an ophthalmologist, struck a chord with voters. He raised topics such as illegal mining, ‘Gonda’ tax and widespread ‘corruption’ among Congress employees.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal personally campaigned for him. Charanjit Singh has been outspoken on the issue of illegal mining in Roop Nagar district and the alleged imposition of gonda tax by some Congress workers. This is also considered to be one of the key reasons for Charanjit Singh Channi’s defeat in his strongest bastion. During a media interaction, when asked about hgis’ rivalry with Channi, he replied:
Charney will lose two seats after he was exposed for illegal mining and other inactions. He abused his position in business activities. I am a true “aam aadmi”. CM Channi leads a luxurious life. I served the community and stayed in the area even after losing the election. I have never done anything illegal such as illegal sand mining. “
