Randeep Guleria was born on Sunday, April 5, 1959 (62 years old in 2021) in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. He completed his schooling from St. Columba’s School, Delhi in 1975. Thereafter, he completed his MBBS from Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), Shimla, and later, he joined the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh, where he completed his M.B.A. in General Medicine and Pulmonology. He also holds a Ph.D. in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.

Randeep Guleria worked as an Assistant Professor at PGI, Chandigarh from 1984 to 1992. In 1992, he joined AIIMS as an Assistant Professor and later rose to the rank of Professor, Head, Department of Pulmonology and Sleep Disorders. In 2011, he established India’s first Centre for Respiratory Diseases and Sleep Medicine at AIIMS, Delhi. He is known for his dynamic leadership of the Department of Pulmonology and Sleep Disorders at AIIMS, Delhi, under which the department was ranked as the best Pulmonology Department by Nielsen survey for three consecutive years in 2014, 2015 and 2016. In 2017, he assumed the charge of Director, AIIMS, Delhi for a period of maximum 5 years or until the age of 65 years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. In March 2022, his tenure as Director, AIIMS was extended by three months.
