Drag Race Star Who Wore Viral Banana Outfit to Emmys Reveals Kim Kardashian Inspired Look (Exclusive)

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Nymphia Wind turned a lot of heads at Sunday’s 2024 Emmy Awards, even though no one could see her face!

Ruling Drag Race the champion hit the red carpet at the Peacock Theater in a full florescent bodycon gown with masks. The layout included hand drawn and glued elements and two giant detachable “leaves”.

While Nymphia is a self-proclaimed “banana queen,” her references for this look were much more high fashion — and inspired by another famous reality TV star.

“The inspiration was from Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala look with Balenciaga, all black,” Nymphia told PEOPLE exclusively on Monday, September 16. “And also from Gareth Pugh’s catwalk in 2016, where they covered his face and then painted him with makeup on top of that face covering.”

“For this version, I wanted to make a bold color and a bold structure and shape, and that was the main focus,” added the dear artist. “I thought it would be good to just cover up her identity because I was interested in what Kim did at the Met where she covered up her identity and just stayed with the physical form.”

Wind designed the dress herself with the help of collaborator Shio Gan. “Leaves” was designed by BadBinch TongTong, a designer from New York.

And just like the reality competition, Nymphia added last-minute details to her outfit just before the show, sharing a video of Shio furiously adding sequins to her dress while driving in a car.

“I used the wrong glue that took longer to dry,” Nymphia said of the decorations. “So I went back to the normal quick dry e6000 [glue] while I was in the car, because some stones fell off. Shio, my partner in crime, who helps me make many of the outfits, shot him as we sped into the hall in the car.”

Upon arrival at the Peacock Theater there were masks and foliage. Nymphia wore no make-up underneath the look – “a little break from tucking in,” as she put it. However, there were still challenges.

“It was very painful, because [the mask] pinched my actual eyelashes. It felt like an eyelash was stabbing my eyeball. So it was very uncomfortable,” she said, admitting that she had to partially remove the mask due to irritation. The mask also made her sweat a lot.

Nymphia admits that everyone in attendance, including Jesse Tyler Ferguson, blew her away.

“He walked by and said, ‘I don’t know who you are, but I love this!’ And I said, ‘I am Nymphia Wind!’ ”

“Oh, we love you!” ” Nymphia recalls Modern family the actor answers. “It’s crazy to meet these people… a lot of them are actually watching Drag Race.”

“Matt Bomer said, ‘Congratulations!’ Matt Bomer doesn’t strike me as a watcher Drag Race!” she added.
