Drew and Jonathan Scott are open about their parents’ decision to move from their dream home in the Canadian Rockies to Los Angeles.
The HGTV hosts, both 46, shared the reason their parents, Jim and Joanne Scott, sacrificed their beloved home base to move to California during an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.
The stars of the new series Don’t hate your house with property brothers, who were born and raised in Canada, explained that their parents left their home forever so they could be closer to their sons and a growing brood of grandchildren.
“They’re abandoning their dreams,” Drew explains, referring to his parents. “Up in the Rocky Mountains, they had a killer view. They spent their whole lives there — they have been together for 60 years. This is where they first met and where they were before they moved here.”

Viewers will get to see the twins renovate their parents’ new Spanish-style bungalow in the final two episodes Don’t hate your house, who premiered on Wednesday, November 13.
“We couldn’t have them move here to be closer to family and hate where they live,” says Drew.
Jonathan explains that they had already renovated their parents’ “beautiful” house in the Rocky Mountains “and loved it,” but ultimately “wanted to be close to their grandchildren.”
He added that they especially felt pressure to make the renovation perfect because “you don’t want to disappoint your mom — that’s the most important thing.”

Drew continues, “We were really nervous because they weren’t going to like it, but I mean, you have to watch the show to find out if they’re going to like it.”
Besides remodeling their parents’ home being absolutely “smart,” Drew notes that all the family moments on the show will be something viewers won’t want to miss. (The stars also have an older brother, JD Scott, who has appeared on their other HGTV shows.)
“Our dad is 90 years old,” he says. “He’s in there with a sledgehammer helping us renovate the house. It’s pretty amazing.”

With their parents’ home makeover on the new show, the brothers work with families frustrated with their homes’ current design and layout to transform them into a functional space that meets all of their needs — especially when moving isn’t an option.
Don’t hate your house with property brothers premieres Wednesday, November 13 at 9:00 PM ET on HGTV.
