dispute

  • She was dropped from the 2014 Commonwealth Games delegation in 2014 after the Athletics Federation of India said she suffered from hyperandrogenism (testosterone levels above permissible limits). This made her ineligible to compete as a female athlete. Thereafter, the Commonwealth Games also removed her from the Indian team for the 2014 Asian Games. She was banned from international competitions. She appealed the ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). CAS lifted the ban on her, citing no evidence that she had elevated testosterone levels. This was a major victory for her as it was a gender case and she had the support of many famous athletes.
  • In 2019, Duti revealed that she had been in a bisexual relationship for the past five years. She is the first Indian athlete to publicly reveal that she has had a relationship with a girl. Many people came out to support her, saying how brave she was to say such things publicly. Her family objected to the relationship. After her statement, her sister Saraswati said Dutee had sex with the girl only for her money and property. Dutee’s mother disapproved of their relationship and said that the girl was Dutee’s niece and she could not be Dutee’s partner.
  • On January 3, 2023, Dutee Chand faced a four-year ban from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after detecting anabolic drugs/SARS in his urine sample. Chand said in an interview that she intends to challenge NADA’s decision and appealed to the state government, central government and NADA to lift the ban and allow her to represent India in the competition.
