Dutee Chand is an Indian athlete. She is a sprinter who has represented India in the Olympics and Asian Games. She is the national record holder in the 100m dash.

Dutee Chand was born on February 3, 1996 (23 years old in 2019). Her zodiac sign is Aquarius. She was born in Jajpur district of Odisha. She received her education from a local school in Chaka Gopalpur village in Odisha. She then pursued her LLB degree from KIIT University, Bhubaneswar in 2013.
She has always been interested in sports. As a child, she used to run around the village all day long. The villagers often said she was crazy. At her sister’s suggestion, she started running along the village’s river bank.
When she entered college, she caught the attention of the team’s coach and subsequently trained for college events. She won many state and national events in college. Later she had to move to Patiala for advanced training. She later moved to Hyderabad to undergo training at Pullela Gopichand Academy. She trained under coach N Ramesh and worked with boys which gave her a lot of confidence. She has the support of her sister Saraswati who motivates her to work harder to achieve her goals. Dutee attributes all her success to Saraswati.

Dutee Chand was born to Chakradhar Chand and Akhuji Chand. She comes from a family below the poverty line and had to face many problems while growing up. Her parents were weavers in Jajpur district of Orissa. In one of her interviews, she revealed that her parents’ income was only Rs. With 500 yuan a month, it is already difficult to support a family with this income. She has 5 sisters and 1 brother.
In May 2019, she revealed that she was in a relationship with a 19-year-old girl in the village. She said she was very happy in the relationship. However, she did not reveal her partner’s name. She was admired across India for being brave and speaking so openly about her relationship with a girl. She became the first openly gay Indian athlete in India.

Her career began in 2012 when she became the national champion in the under-18 category in the 100 meters. She won a bronze medal at the 2013 Asian Athletics Championships in Pune.
In 2013, she became the first Indian to reach the 100m finals in global athletics; when she reached the finals of the 2013 World Youth Championships. In the same year, she won the national title in 100m and 200m dash at the Senior National Athletics Championships in Ranchi. In June 2014, she won two gold medals in the 200m and 4x400m relay at the Asian Youth Athletics Championships.
At the 2016 Asian Indoor Track and Field Championships, she participated in the 60-meter event, setting an Indian national record with a time of 7.28 seconds in the qualifying round and winning a bronze medal in the main event. On June 25, 2016, she broke the 100m national record with a time of 11.24 seconds at the 26th International Games in Almaty, Kazakhstan. In the same year at the Rio Olympics, she became the third Indian woman to compete in the women’s 100m sprint.
In 2017, at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, she won two bronze medals, one in the women’s 100m and the other in the women’s 4×100m relay. At the 2018 Asian Games, Duti won the silver medal in the women’s 100m final. This is Dutee’s first medal at the Asian Games and India’s first silver in the category after 32 years since PT Usha won in 1996. On August 29, 2018, she won her second Asian Games silver medal in the women’s 200m final.
Dutee became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the 100 meters at the 30th Summer University Games (World University Games) in Naples, Italy. Her time was 11.32 seconds, leading the entire race.

- She was dropped from the 2014 Commonwealth Games delegation in 2014 after the Athletics Federation of India said she suffered from hyperandrogenism (testosterone levels above permissible limits). This made her ineligible to compete as a female athlete. Thereafter, the Commonwealth Games also removed her from the Indian team for the 2014 Asian Games. She was banned from international competitions. She appealed the ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). CAS lifted the ban on her, citing no evidence that she had elevated testosterone levels. This was a major victory for her as it was a gender case and she had the support of many famous athletes.
- In 2019, Duti revealed that she had been in a bisexual relationship for the past five years. She is the first Indian athlete to publicly reveal that she has had a relationship with a girl. Many people came out to support her, saying how brave she was to say such things publicly. Her family objected to the relationship. After her statement, her sister Saraswati said Dutee had sex with the girl only for her money and property. Dutee’s mother disapproved of their relationship and said that the girl was Dutee’s niece and she could not be Dutee’s partner.
- On January 3, 2023, Dutee Chand faced a four-year ban from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after detecting anabolic drugs/SARS in his urine sample. Chand said in an interview that she intends to challenge NADA’s decision and appealed to the state government, central government and NADA to lift the ban and allow her to represent India in the competition.

- Her family was poor and her father could not provide food for all his children. Therefore, he sent Duti and her sister Saraswati to stay at the Government Sports Hotel.
- The first pair of shoes Dutee wore in professional competition was a pair of Goldstar shoes, and it took her 2 to 3 weeks to get used to the shoes.

- She was appointed as Assistant Manager of Odisha Mining Corporation on May 23, 2016. The job was awarded to her by the Odisha government in recognition of her contribution to sports. In July 2016, she also received a grant of Rs. 10 Lacs to assist in the preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik directed Odisha Mining Corporation to provide her with the grant.
- On March 31, 2019, she received a certificate of recognition from the Indian Olympic Athletes Association in recognition of her performance and in recognition of her hard work for the sport.
