Phil called him back to his place where they met.

Nigel told him: “Me and Julie split a while ago. I tried to sell the house but failed. She found someone else and wanted me out.”

“Couldn’t Clare have you?” Phil asked.

But Nigel told him: “No. We lost touch a long time ago.

“I have to admit, I never thought I would end up alone, at the age of 66, and not a penny in the world.”

Phil asked him where he lived, and Nigel claimed he was homeless and lived in hostels when he had room.

So Phil told him he could stay with him, insisting: “I don’t have a family. I’m alone and that’s how I love it – no strings attached, no restrictions. I am satisfied with my tod.

“Okay, you sit here and I’ll put the pizza in the oven.”

But when Phil disappeared into the kitchen, it became clear that Nigel had lied to him.

He got a text from his wife Julie – and it was clear they hadn’t split up.

EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw has teased that Nigel is hiding some big secrets.

He said: “It’s fantastic to welcome back Paul Bradley as Nigel Bates, a character much loved by long-term EastEnders viewers.

“There is a lot of mystery surrounding Nigel’s situation and why he is here alone, which will be revealed in the coming weeks.
