An EasyJet flight did not take off after a passenger pooped on the bathroom floor.
Before Sunday’s flight was canceled, it was already several hours late, according to passenger Kitty Streek, who shared a video of the pilot announcing the cancellation on X (formerly known as Twitter).
In the video, the pilot announced that someone on the plane had defecated in the front lavatory of the plane. “So now we’re staying the night here,” he said, a statement that was met with a collective sigh from the flight’s already exasperated passengers.
News of someone pooping on the bathroom floor apparently spread quickly, as one passenger could be heard saying in the video: “Who’s… on the floor? No way.”

Streek – who criticized easyJet in the title of her video – also spoke to CNN about her experience flying from Tenerife, a Spanish island, to London’s Gatwick Airport, calling it “very frustrating”.
“Obviously we can’t prove whether the person just had an accident or did it out of anger over a delayed flight, but it was hard not to be angry either way,” the London resident told the news outlet.
“No one wants to be stranded in another country,” she added.
Another passenger on the canceled flight, Aaran Gedhu, also spoke to CNN about Sunday’s incident.
According to Gedhu, the scheduled aircraft was replaced by a smaller aircraft before boarding began, and some passengers were turned away at the gate as a result. Those who were allowed to board did so two hours after they were due to take off and waited in their seats for another hour while their bags were removed from the plane because they were too heavy.

The delayed, overcrowded flight had an air of “tension and anger”, Gedhu told CNN, adding that it didn’t help that easyJet’s planes were already uncomfortable and lacked legroom.
“So everybody was just a little bit tense,” he said. “Then the pilot finally gave the all clear, and said it would be about 20 minutes until takeoff. And that’s when the defecation incident happened.”
After two passengers visited the front bathroom, word spread that someone had pooped on the bathroom floor, he recalled. Not long after, a foul stench seemingly confirmed the rumor.

Gedhu described the poo fiasco as an “accident” and said that despite the run of emotions, “everyone was polite to each other”.
“There was no fight among the passengers,” he told CNN.
“It was just a very unpleasant experience,” he continued. “It is obvious that the plane was in an unsanitary condition. So they had to bring in outside cleaners from the airport to clean it. Then the stairs came together again and the cleaners came in to deep clean the floor.”
While the cleaners were fixing the situation in the bathroom, Gedhu said he and the other easyJet passengers remained seated. Then the pilot made an announcement that Streek videotaped.
After the flight was officially canceled, passengers had to wait another half hour before they could disembark, Gedhu told CNN, adding that he was put up in a hotel overnight and – as the pilot had promised – boarded a “rescue” flight. the following day .

In a statement shared with CNN, easyJet said the flight was canceled due to “additional cleaning” and the delay before the faecal incident was due to “security reasons”.
“Some bags were offloaded to be carried on the next available flight for safety reasons, due to the excessive weight of the aircraft,” the airline said in a statement, adding that the flight was “subsequently delayed overnight as the aircraft required additional cleaning.”
Elsewhere in the statement, easyJet said it was unable to provide hotel accommodation for all customers due to limited availability. The airline said it had “advised all customers who booked themselves that they will be refunded.”
“The safety and well-being of our customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority and although this was beyond our control, we would like to apologize to customers for any inconvenience caused,” it said in a statement.

A month before the easyJet faecal fiasco, a different defecation incident made headlines.
In September, a Delta flight from Atlanta to Barcelona, Spain, was grounded when it returned to the airport after a passenger had severe diarrhea.
In an audio clip emergency call to dispatchers, the pilot said, “It’s just a biohazard issue … we had a passenger who had diarrhea all the way through the plane, so they want us to go back to Atlanta.”
After the incident, Delta confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that there was a “medical issue” on board.
“Our teams worked as quickly and safely as possible to thoroughly clean the aircraft and get our customers to their final destination,” the statement said. “We sincerely apologize to our customers for the delay and inconvenience to their travel plans.”
