Edwin Catmull was born on March 31, 1945 in Parkersburg, West Virginia. His father, who raised him and his four siblings, was a high school principal. In his early years, he was less interested in movies and more in mathematics, physics and computer science. However, he always wanted to meet Walt Disney.

Catmull became interested in this theory after noticing Sutherland’s computer graphics in animation. During his tenure, Catmull discovered three fundamental concepts in computer graphics: the Z buffer, texture mapping, and bicubic patches.

Career

In 1979, Catmull moved to Northern California to work for Lucasfilm Ltd. The studio, named after its founder, Star Wars executive George Lucas, was also interested in producing a fully computer-animated film. Catmull was brought in to establish this division.

Some of Catmull’s mechanical leaps forward during this time found their way into Lucas’ various assignments, such as bringing the lonely planet to life in 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Catmull created a capable research group working with 2D vibrancy, focusing on instruments that could help artists in their work. Among the developments was a coloring program simply called Paint, which looked like an early version of Disney’s CAPS, a Tween business activity program.

At Lucasfilm, he developed advanced image compositing technology that was used to convincingly combine different images. Subsequently, in 1986, Steve Jobs bought Lucasfilm’s advanced division and founded Pixar, where Catmull became chief technical officer. It was the key delivery framework for RenderMan at Pixar, used in films such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo.

After Disney acquired Pixar in January 2006, Disney CEO Bob Iger tasked Catmull and John Lasseter with revitalizing Disney’s animation studios.

According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, part of the deal was to give the bosses more creative control as collaborators over their assignments and artistic freedom to use conventional motion strategies—contrary to previous CEO Michael Eisner’s decision that Disney would only do advanced animation, which Catmull felt with some objectionable thought about how wonderfully Pixar’s films have progressed.

He is known for his work on animated films such as Cars, Ratatouille, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Frozen and many others.
