Ed Cooley was born on September 10, 1969 in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended Central High School in Providence, where he played basketball and was named the Rhode Island Player of the Year in 1988. He then went on to play basketball at Stonehill College, where he was a two-time All-American.
After college, Cooley began his coaching career at his alma mater, Central High School, where he was an assistant coach. He then went on to coach at several other high schools in the Providence area before becoming an assistant coach at the college level.
