Ekta started her career as a producer in 2001 with “Kyo Kii…Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta”. She followed this up with “Kucch To Hai” and “Krishna Cottage” based on supernatural themes. In 2005, she produced the film “Kyaa Kool Hai Hum”, starring her brother Tusshar Kapoor. She went on to produce films like Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, Shor in the City and Half Girlfriend.

- In 2007, Ekta had a dispute with Smriti Israeli, after which Irani left the serial “Kunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”. Irani returned to the show in 2008 after seeing the show’s declining TRPs.
- Actor Pulkit Samrat was unable to shoot for Ekta’s serial ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ due to a back injury and there were some pending payment issues with her. Ekta denied clearing his payment, following which he filed a case against her company Balaji Telefilms for non-payment of dues and not allowing him to work on other projects.
- Rajput Kshatriya Akhil Bharatiya Chatariya Sabha has launched a protest against Ekta’s TV serial “Jodha Akbar” as they feel that wrong facts are presented in the serial.
- Ekta is often criticized for her sartorial choices that she flaunts at various events. The clothes she wore were either uncomfortable or unappreciated.
- She was also criticized for adding a nudity clause to her contract so that actors who agreed to work with her wouldn’t back out of any intimate scenes or provocative dialogue in the script.
- Ekta Kapoor also courted controversy after her feud with Rajiv Khandelwal. Rajiv, who rose to fame for his role as Sujal in the TV series Kahiin Toh Hoga, claims that he does not need Kapoor for his success. The row got more heated when Khandelwal said he didn’t like Ekta’s TV show. They didn’t talk for a long time but slowly made up.
- After it was revealed that the movie “Drishyam” was adapted from the Japanese novel “The Devotion of Suspect X”, Ekta sent a legal notice to the film’s producers, claiming that she had the rights to make a movie based on the novel. This caused a lot of controversy.
- On October 14, 2022, Justices Ajay Rastogi and CT Ravikumar of the Supreme Court of India severely reprimanded Ekta Kapoor for showing ” “Objectionable content”; the judge held that the producers had polluted the minds of young people through such content. The bench commented,
Something must be done. You are polluting the minds of the young generation of this country. It’s available to everyone. OTT content is available to everyone. What choices do you offer the people? …On the contrary, you are polluting the minds of young people. “
Lawyer Rohatgi responded to the court in his defense that the content is subscription-based and people can choose what to watch and what not to watch. The judges want to know what kind of choices people have. The bench said,
Every time you go to this court… we don’t appreciate that. We will charge you a fee for filing such a petition. Mr. Rohatgi, please convey this to your client. Just because you can afford and retain the services of a good attorney…this court is not for those who have a voice. This court is for those who have no voice… If these people who have all kinds of facilities, if they cannot get justice, then think about the plight of this common man. We have seen the order and have reservations. ”
- In October 2024, Mumbai police registered a case against Ekta and Shobha Kapoor for submitting and posting inappropriate adult scenes with underage actors in the ALTT web series Gandi Baat. The case was filed against the duo under Section 295-A of the IPC, IT Act and Sections 13 and 15 of the POCSO Act.
