At the end of the following month, Broward County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer, who presided over Nikolas Cruz’s sentencing trial, will step down. Scherer, 46, gave Gov. Ron DeSantis her letter of resignation on Wednesday.
According to Chief Judge Jack Tuter of Florida’s 17th Judicial Circuit, “Judge Scherer approached me last year to advise she would soon be leaving the bench.” “During her tenure, Judge Scherer handled one of the most difficult cases in the annals of Broward County. She performed it with dignity and professionalism. We wish Judge Scherer health and success in her future endeavours on behalf of the 17th Circuit.
After being removed from another murder case involving the death penalty by the Florida Supreme Court, Scherer resigned. Justices agreed that in the Parkland school shooting trial, she unfairly sympathised with the prosecution.
The court’s unanimous judgement stated that after Cruz was sentenced, Judge Scherer immediately got up from the bench and embraced the families of the victims and the prosecution team while still wearing her judicial robe.
Cruz’s defence lawyers requested that she resign from the case during the Parkland trial because they believed she was biassed against their client. Scherer, however, dismissed the motion as being legally insufficient.
In 2012, the circuit court bench was filled by Scherer, who received her law degree from the University of Miami and her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University. Judge David Krathen had retired at the time of Scherer’s appointment. She had just turned 36.
Mike Satz, who will represent herself in court as the lead prosecutor, worked under Scherer as an associate state attorney in Broward County before to her appointment as a judge.
Her father achieved prominence before her. Bill Scherer, a well-known Republican attorney and the founding partner of Conrad & Scherer in Fort Lauderdale, represented former president George W. Bush in the Broward County recount of the 2000 presidential election.
