Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult Address the Cancellation of The Great: 'Too Many Brilliant Moments'

Nearly three months after Hulu announced it had not renewed its Emmy-nominated series a big in the fourth season, Elle Fanning looks back on her time portraying the Russian Queen Catherine II.

The actress (25) shared a series of pictures on Instagram on Sunday that show some of her fondest memories from the set.

“Scrolling down memory lane,” she began her tribute. β€œI could not properly share my thoughts after the news of A big’cancellation. This show meant the world to me. Shared experiences. Memories I will never forget.”

Calling creator, writer and executive producer Tony McNamara a “certified genius,” Fanning explained how the “last 3 seasons” of the show “shaped me.”

“Playing Catherine revealed parts of me I didn’t know I had,” she wrote. “I love every member of the crew and the cast very much. And although I won’t get to tie the corset for the last time, I’m forever proud of what we’ve achieved together.”

She concluded: “In my mind, Catherine remains a ‘whiff all night’ finally stepping into the leader we always knew she would be, lots of lovers thrown in for good measure, lots of macarons, shots of vodka, long speeches, battles of wits, and of course HUUU-F —ING-ZZAHHHHSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ₯‚”

In August, Deadline reported this a big was canceled after 3 seasons. The period comedy was based on Empress Catherine the Great’s rise to power in Russia as she maneuvered her way through a court full of schemers and social climbers.

The series earned seven Emmy nominations during its run and was awarded the 2022 Emmy for Outstanding Costume Design. Fanning also received a SAG Award, a Critics Choice Award, an Independent Spirit Award and two Golden Globe nominations for her performance.
