While presenting the award, Pompeo took the opportunity to reflect on the wildly successful hospital drama that made her a household name.

“When is the first episode Grey’s Anatomy aired in March 2005, I’m not sure Shonda Rhimes knew she’d created a series that would have a lasting impact on television and create lifelong friendships,” she said.

Chambers — who played Dr. Alex Karev — continued, noting that the series and its “400 episodes and counting” has become “a tribute to everyone who is now a part of our family.”

Heigel then thanked the show’s incredibly loyal fan base, calling them “the one thing that has remained constant.”

Wilson, who remains on the show as Dr. Bailey, recounted some of the show’s most memorable moments. “You have stayed with us through plane crashes, super storms, earthquakes and a global pandemic,” he said. “And as we begin our 20th season, we’re officially the longest-running prime-time medical drama in TV history.”

After 19 seasons, Pompeo has officially stepped down as host of the ABC drama series. The actress, who remains an executive producer, will continue to provide voices as Grey’s continues to move forward.

Then Rhimes, 54, paid tribute to her longtime collaborator via Instagram, posting: “What a journey these 19 seasons have been! I wouldn’t trade them (or you) for anything. Beyond excited for your next chapter. See you later, Dr. Grey.”
