Eloise Brook News
According to testimony given before a NSW inquiry into past LGBT hate crimes, the transgender and gender nonconforming population is today more vulnerable to assault than ever before. This week, the special committee of investigation is concentrating on legal, social, and cultural problems that occurred during the time period it is looking into suspected hate crime killings in the state between 1970 and 2010.
Eloise Brook, a writer, campaigner, and professor, claimed at a public hearing today in Sydney that trans people were “swept up” in the violence that was growing as a result of queer visibility in the 1980s and 1990s.
According to Dr. Brook, during those decades there was far less distinction made between the various factions within the larger LGBT society. When they were using violence against someone, no one bothered to ask if they were trans, a trans woman, or gay, she claimed.
Dr. Brook, who also serves as the Health and Communications Manager at The Gender Centre, the state’s primary support organisation, voiced worry about transphobic or prejudiced media reports.
Although there has always been some media coverage of trans people, she claimed that it is now “unparalleled,” with a new piece focusing on the community being published every week, whether it be about sports, kids, or other subjects.
In her presentation to the committee, Dr. Brook said, “It is important to recognise that violence against the LGBTIQ community is not a purely historical phenomenon.”
Transrespect vs. Transphobia Worldwide, a global advocacy group, has been compiling a list of the names of trans and gender nonconforming people who are killed every year since 2008.
Only two names from Australia were included on the list, according to Dr. Brook, which is in no way representative of the actual number.
In her testimony, she discussed how the “bureaucratic process of death” might be detrimental since it prioritises safeguarding the relatives or loved ones of the deceased and removes gender diversity from any information a coroner may have.
